Trip summary

Our annual visit to St Kilda will be on 29th – 31st August. St Kilda is an iconic, magical place, so if you haven’t been, it should be on your bucket list! And camping there is a special experience, as most visitors only go for the day and don’t get this opportunity.

Dates

29th – 31st August 2025

Trip itinerary

This will be a 2-day trip, with 1 night camping on Hirta, but we have a 3-day window (to give some flexibility on weather) so you need to be available all 3 days. Departure is from Leverburgh. Note that we will not be landing on Dun at this time due to restrictions imposed by the NTS. The boat is Sea Harris ‘Enchanted Isle’ which can carry 12 passengers. The cost is £395pp (incl a small tip for the crew), assuming a full complement of 12. The NTS camping fee of £20 (tbc) is additional. The campsite has good toilet/washing facilities, and some of the buildings (church/schoolhouse, museum etc) will be open.

Challenges and competences needed

Landings on Soay and Boreray are very dependent on sea conditions. The Sea Harris crew are very experienced at this and will do their best to land folk if possible but there are, of course, no guarantees. After landing on Soay there is a short scramble/moderate rock climb to reach the scree and steep grass which leads up to the summit. Boreray could also involve a climb, depending on the landing point. We will need 1 or 2 experienced climbers to set up a rope on Soay and assist with the climb and abseil descent. Folks need to provide their own climbing helmet, harness, and belay device. You should also take micro-spikes to assist on slippery rock.
